Twin Pregnancy Diary - 35 weeks 5 days

Every time I sit at the laptop to write another Twin Pregnancy Diary entry I wonder if it might just be the last time.  As I sit uncomfortably in my chair at my desk I also wonder how on earth I am still writing it.  Could it possibly be much longer?  I have given up to some degree though and no longer wondering if today will be the day.  I've resigned myself to being the only woman in the history of the world who is going to be pregnant forever.

Well, until next Thursday, at least.

I went to have my final appointment with the Consultant's team on Tuesday.  It was a 3.15pm appointment which resulted in my not getting home until shortly before 7pm as I was sent up to triage for monitoring of the babies.  I didn't really mind as prefer to be safe than sorry and it did alleviate my concerns regarding their reduced movements.  Both heartbeats are considered to be strong and healthy and the trace which the monitor reported back showed no signs of concern at all.  To be on the safe side they also arranged for another scan to be carried out on the babies which again confirmed that they are growing fine and dandy.  All fluids are fine, blood flow is great and there is nothing to worry about.  Both babies seem to have gained weight well in the three weeks since the last scan, going from 4lb 3oz and 4lb 4oz respectively to 5lb 12oz approximately for the both of them.  They're doing well!

So now we are officially into the final countdown.

There is one week to go.

Seven days.

Count them!

Seven!!!

It still seems aaaages away.  I know it will pass by but, good giddy aunt of mine, I am so uncomfortable that every day seems like a major hurdle to get through.  The scan confirmed that I have one head engaged firmly down into my pelvis.  As if that isn't causing enough discomfort and pain there is a second head (thankfully from a second small person, and not a two-headed baby which would be likely to cause some degree of alarm I would imagine) wedged right up into my ribs.

I have no idea where my internal organs have gone.  I look at my reflection and think that they cannot possibly be comfortable in there.  There seems such little space left for them both and I can't help but look at my butt and wonder why they don't make their way over there.  After all, there seems to be a copious amount of room over in that part of my body, given the rate at which it has grown over the last few months.  They'd be able to live there until their twenties with space for on site parking and their own shopping centre.

We've had quite a few guesses for their arrival dates/weights/genders.  Have you added yours yet?

Still.

Seven days.

Will I make it or will they be the longest seven days in the history of the world?

Watch this space!

Twin Pregnancy Diary - 35 weeks 2 days

Earlier on during this pregnancy I did wonder whether I would still be writing this diary at this stage. To reach 35 weeks of a twin pregnancy is quite an achievement I believe. The babies are growing strong and healthy with every extra day and that is the main thing.  However, I am beginning to think that despite the warnings that multiples can and often do come early, this would not apply to me and my cervix of steel.

I'm still grumpy.

Oh goodness, I did not imagine being so uncomfortable now. I always find the end of pregnancy can't come quick enough but this time around the heaviness and discomfort is really making me miserable.

I am finding myself feeling permanently tired, like I'm in a thick fog or cloud or something. It's not a normal "I've missed some sleep" tiredness but a general weariness of great proportions. When I lie down gravity pulls my belly either to one side or the other. After a while this stretches on the ligaments at the underside of my belly and good grief, it hurts! I am waking several times a night needing to sit up straight on the side of my bed or to get up and walk around for half an hour before it eases enough for me to go back to bed and try to sleep again. Poor Mike wakes up wondering whether I'm in labour.

Anyway, the end is in sight. There are now ten days left until the caesarean date. We are ready and waiting now. Tomorrow is my final appointment with the consultant where we'll be going over the risks of the c-section and getting my signature on the paperwork. I think I'll also mention once again my concern at the babies movements which I'm quite sure have lessened lately compared to how they were. It wouldn't be surprising that they are finding it harder to move around as space in there must be very limited now, but I think I'll mention it to her if only for reassurance.

I have enjoyed reading everyone's guesses on when the babies will arrive and what sexes/weights they'll be. If you haven't added your guess yet you can add it here.

So, just ten days to go.

The question is, will I make it?

Just a quick reminder that when I go in for the caesarean on the 20th, or if I go into labour before, I probably won't be updating the blog first but I'll be updating through the Larger Family Life Facebook Page and Twitter first as it's easier.  If you want to keep up to date with things as they happen and keep me company along the way then please sign up.

Twin Pregnancy Diary - 34wks 6d - Get your guesses in!

Well, I'm hitting 35 weeks tomorrow and I'm still here. How am I still here? How are they still in there? It just doesn't seem possible that my body can possibly accommodate any more growth from these babies yet it does.

The Braxton Hicks contractions have been becoming more frequent and more intense over the last few days. I will get five or six an hour, for hours and hours... and then they'll stop. I get so frustrated as it's so tiring to keep getting these pains so regularly and frequently for them only to cease for a few hours, and then begin all over again.

I had to spend the best part of last night sleeping sitting up.  Through the night I had taken more then eight, possibly ten Rennie antacids in the fight against heartburn but they were not helping at all.  There was no respite at all and I really didn't want to end up overdosing on, well, chalk.  Between that and general discomfort and tiny bladder syndrome, sleep is becoming an old pal who I only seem to acknowledge with a nod as we pass each other by in this particular road of life.  In the words of Vera Lynn, we'll meet again, old friend.

I hope.

I am ready.  I am really, really ready to meet these little people.  The reassurance that there are only 13 more days to go at most before they arrive by scheduled c-section doesn't cut it with me.  I am past the point of "only" and instead I am wondering how on earth I am going to make it until then.  There is no "only".

On the other hand, I am so happy to have made it to almost 35 weeks.  The babies are getting bigger, healthier and stronger every day and so are less likely to be needing much, if at all, intervention at birth.  That is a good thing, a great thing, yet I'm still feeling like a bomb waiting to go off at any minute.  The feelings are so conflicting and I feel guilty for wanting them out so much when I know that every day they stay in is better for them.  Mummy guilt.  You have to love it.

Oh well, I'm thinking that to pass the time we might play a little game.  At home we've drawn up a chart where we've all put our guesses for the following:

Your Name:
Twins Birthday:
Twin 1 Gender:
Twin 1 Weight:
Twin 2 Gender:
Twin 2 Weight:

I would love it if you left a comment below here on the blog, copy and pasting the above and adding your guesses to it.  It's just a bit of fun and will be great to see if any of you get any (or all!) of the guesses right.  Please do join in!

Twin Pregnancy Diary - 34 weeks 4 days

Twin Pregnancy 34 weeks

I apologise for the lateness of this week's update.  Remember I told you about sickness in a large family?  Well, I got it.

Like it hadn't been enough being hit with one thing after another the last few weeks, I became even more tired and lethargic than normal, or rather what has become "normal" lately, on Friday.  I slept through the weekend and Monday of this week, and the vomiting began on Saturday.  This increased the Braxton Hicks contractions leading to a very restless Sunday night, wondering whether I should call my friend on night labour standby.

The Braxton Hicks calmed down eventually, or at least enough for me to sleep.  My theory is that if I can sleep through any pains then I'm not in labour.  The following day I was still ill, still dehydrating, and again experiencing strong tightenings.  I rang the triage on the labour ward to be told I would not be seen there as I had a bug.  Fair enough, but what if labour did progress?!  I had visions of Mike having to deliver the twins in the living room.

Anyway, I'm feeling much better now and the twins are still inside.  I have really had enough now.  The twentieth seems a lifetime away even though it is now only 15 days away.  I truly feel like I am at the final hurdles and I'm finding it difficult to jump them.  My energy levels are so depleted as are my defences.  I'm hoping I don't get hit with anything else before the babies arrive.

I know I'm supposed to say how I'm glad the babies are still inside, being cooked as they should be.

I know I'm supposed to say I'm cherishing these last few weeks and days.

I know I would feel as guilty as hell if they were to be born now and put into special care.

But I can't help how I feel, and at the moment I feel completely and utterly fed up.  Uncomfortable, knackered and good for nothing and so, so ready for it to be all over.

What happens when things don't quite go to plan?

This week hasn't turned out to be the greatest so far. It began with the washing machine creaking its way through the final stages of its life. It is still going... just... but we couldn't risk waiting for it to give up the ghost completely and being without so we had to order a replacement for it which is due to be delivered today.

Of course, Tuesday's appointment with the consultant didn't go to plan and ended up with me being admitted into hospital for tests on possible clots on my lungs. This was something I didn't even consider happening. Blood clots on my lungs were nowhere on the radar and I didn't even think they may be the reason for my symptoms. My consultant wanted to rule out otherwise though, and rather than skipping home announcing a date for the c-section I was heavy heartedly packing my overnight bag to head back to the hospital for monitoring and tests.

I went back in on Tuesday evening and a fetal monitoring machine was brought in, on which I was to be hooked up to in a little while. "In a little while" turned out to be almost eighteen hours later the following lunch time. But never mind.

The room was hot, hot, hot and I am finding it very difficult to keep cool at the best of times. Sitting facing the fan at full blast wasn't helping so I decided to have a shower to cool myself down. There is no cubicle, but the bathroom was more like a wetroom with a shower in the corner draining away directly into the plughole in the floor.

Except it didn't.

I finished my shower and looked for a dry part of floor to move to so I could get my pyjamas on. There was no dry part. There wasn't even a shallow part of the room. There was water, water everywhere! Wherever I stepped I created ripples. The ensuite was one, huge puddle!

I started pulling out the paper hand towels and tried mopping up the water from the floor, still half naked as I wasn't able to get my pj's on without dragging them through the sopping wetness. It took a good deal of time before I managed to get even a small amount of space dry enough for me to try and contort myself into my pyjamas. It would have been difficult at the best of times but throw a 33+ week twin pregnancy into the mix and I was gasping for breath desperately.

Thinking I'd open up the door and step out onto the dry floor of my room for a moment wasn't such a good idea after all. It turned out I'd not only flooded the ensuite but also my room. There was a good inch of water on the other side of the door too. Once again I grabbed handfuls of paper towels worrying that in a moment someone would a) walk in and slip or b) come and tell me off.

Two carers then walked in. They didn't slip. They didn't tell me off. They did go out and grab a few big bath-towels and started mopping my flood of biblical proportions up, reassuring me that no, it wasn't my fault because that shower did tend to flood and they should have told me and no, they didn't want me to clear up the mess myself.

I felt awful.

Anyway, I had a restless night full of interruptions and monitoring. Sleeping in hospital is a challenge and you never seem to come out of those places rested, do you?

I was taken down to the Nuclear Medicine department for my scan at 9am yesterday. They injected me with radioactive fluid which would run through my lungs, showing up any clots. As I was pregnant they said they would only be carrying out the second part of the test. If the results were unclear or showed a problem I would need to stay in another night and go back the following day to carry out part one of the test. I lay down on a table and I was then moved down into a tube with my head barely sticking out of the top. The tube moved around me, quite quietly and with not really very much vibration or movement at all, clicking every ten seconds or so when it took a picture of my lungs. I got to the last minute of the 20 minute procedure when I suddenly needed to be out of there. Now!

"How much longer to go?!" I called out.

"I need to get out! I need to get out now!"

The panic set in fast. I suddenly without warning had to get out of there. I was hot, sweating and clammy. I was ready to fight my way out of the machine.

I was told there were only about forty seconds left. If I moved now I'd have to go through the whole process again. I clenched my fists and squeezed my eyes shut and tried desperately to breathe.

"NO! I NEED TO GET OUT NOW! I REALLY NEED TO GET OUT NOW!!"

"Just thirty more seconds"

"I CAN'T!!! I NEED TO GET OUT!!"

Ugh, it was awful. I did make it. But I thought, no way will I be getting back in there again no matter what the pictures show. If I needed to get in they'd have to knock me out first. I take it I had a panic attack. I have never experienced anything like that before. It was horrible!

I waited and it took a few more hours before the results came back. After lunch time my consultant walked through to say the results were clear and there were no clots. My breathlessness, tiredness, dizziness and headaches were more than likely just down to no more than the end few weeks of a demanding twin pregnancy but they had to rule out something that could have been a lot more dangerous.

I could go home!

Despite being ready to grab my belongings and run we still had paperwork to sort out. I still needed to be formally discharged and we still had to agree on a date for the caesarean section. My consultant originally offered 31st October, more than five weeks away and way, way too far for my liking or acceptance. We finally agreed on 20th October. A day before my dad's birthday, and four days before mine... that's if they stay in until then! The 20th October is three weeks today. The countdown now begins to the latest day we'll meet our babies!

I was discharged from the hospital after a couple more hours of hanging around. I came home to a house well run by Mike in my absence. He'd picked up and taken over the reins well, even though he'd been up several times in the night with a vomiting Paddy. By the time I'd been home an hour Mike too was feeling unwell. By the evening, he was clearly down with a stomach bug himself.

It's not turning out to be such an easy week, this one. It's 6.15am and I'm the only one up at the moment. I hope Paddy and Mike are better today. I hope nobody else comes down with anything. I hope the babies won't decide to make their own entrance into the world into the midst of sickness and broken down washing machines.

But still, I have the all clear. No clots, no concern and a great relief from what could have been. Let the countdown begin!

Admitted to hospital

This is just a quick update for those if you who are not yet following on our Facebook page or Twitter. The appointment yesterday didn't quite go to plan. My consultant was concerned that my breathlessness/dizziness/headaches might be caused by blood clots in my lungs. I was allowed to go home to eat dinner and grab a bag of my things before coming back to be admitted.

I had a blood thinning injection late last night in order to break down any clots that might be there. I am booked in for a scan at dome point today which will hopefully rule out any problems. It's a little scary but I'm hoping everything will be ok and that I will be home later today.

Will update on FB and Twitter through the day.

Twin Pregnancy Diary - 33 weeks 2 days

Twin Pregnancy 33 weeks

It's official.  I have had enough.

The last couple of weeks have been hard going.  I don't like hard going.  I like an easy life.  I like easy pregnancies, which thankfully I have pretty much always had.  I know, I've been spoilt.

I don't like being so big.  I don't like being so restricted and so cumbersome.  This stage is nothing like a singleton pregnancy at all.  While I feel incredibly blessed and lucky to be expecting twins I cannot help but feel completely and utterly fed up now.

The best part of the last two weeks have left me in some level of discomfort or pain in one way or another.  I am not used to that.  The headaches are still pretty much constant with little respite unless I take painkillers and I don't want to be pumping myself with them all the time.  They seem to go hand in hand with tiredness and I can't quite work out if the headaches cause the tiredness or vice versa.  I am still taking antibiotics for the urine infection and the Braxton Hicks go on regularly for hour after hour, day after day.  As with all the other pregnancies they aren't actually doing anything effective apart from annoying the daylights out of me and making me more tired.

I woke up this morning with the backache from hell and a pain across the top of my uterus.  Actually, I can't quite work out if it is a pain at the top of the uterus or a pain at the bottom of my ribs.  All I know is that I am feeling unbearably sore and tender there and I have never in any pregnancy experienced anything like it.  Throw in the regular BH contractions and I feel like finishing off a tub of ice cream all by myself.

All the way through this pregnancy I have been concerned about Twin 2's movements to some degree.  Twin 1 has always been the more active, but Twin 2 much less so.  When I expressed concern to the midwife she said she thought it was down to how Twin 2 was lying and its position.  After the scan it seems Twin 2 has now changed to a completely different position of head up yet the movements are still not any stronger.  I'm wondering whether this is worth bringing up to the consultant at tomorrow's appointment?

Oh, the scan!  I don't think I updated about that, did I?  Well, like I just said, Twin 2 has flipped around so it is now head up and wedged right under my ribs and is estimated to weight 4lbs 4oz.  Twin 1 is still lying head down and low and is estimated to weigh 4lbs 3oz.  Neither baby is showing any cause for concern.

Tomorrow is the consultant's appointment where we will be discussing the caesarean and scheduling a date for it.  At this stage I'm taking things one day at a time.  I'm trying not to let myself think that I could yet have another five weeks of this.  Two or three I could handle, but five... I think I'll cry!

Twin Pregnancy Diary - 32 weeks 2 days

32 week twin pregnancy

The last few weeks of this pregnancy are snowballing symptom-wise.  The tiredness is becoming chronic now, yet with various things going on resting daily isn't always possible.  I'm taking snatches of the day to lie down on the sofa in the midst of toys and chatter and children.  The tiredness takes such a hold that it leaves me feeling sick and weak, although it's probably more like my iron levels are doing that and also causing the tiredness in the first place.  I am also suffering from the most excruciating headaches at the moment.  I'm very much looking forward to Mike finishing on Friday so I can disappear to my bed for half an hour here and there if I feel I need to.  We had a busy couple of days at the end of last week, resulting in my falling asleep several times throughout the day yesterday and spending the best part of it feeling quite ill.

I have another growth scan coming up on Thursday this week to check on the babies.  I predict they'll be weighing in somewhere around the 4lb mark each.  I am feeling and seeing plenty of activity so they seem to be doing ok in there, but it's good to have the reassurance of this extra monitoring.  I also need to go and have another blood test done to check on my iron levels.  It wouldn't surprise me if the consultant states that I need to go ahead with the iron infusions when I go back for my appointment next week.  I have mixed feelings, as never having had them before I am not sure what to expect, but I do feel like they couldn't make me feel any worse than I do already.  This stage of pregnancy is getting a little tricky for me.

The Braxton Hicks aren't letting up either.  My back has begun to hurt with the strain of the extra weight I am carrying (not just babies but possible down to excess ice-cream too), and I just feel like I'm one big, huge complaining lump.  I've also been feeling down for other reasons following a post I made last week.  Hormonal and over-sensitive perhaps, but the thought of a field in the middle of nowhere quite appeals at the moment.

Within the last couple of weeks, three women I had been following on Twitter have delivered their twins, one at 35 weeks, one at 36 weeks and one at 38 weeks.  I don't think I'm following anyone else due before me which brought the realisation that I am next.  While I know these babies need a couple more weeks at least I think I'll be sighing with at least a little relief to reach the 34 week mark, which is the goal everyone in the medical profession is giving as the point to get to in order to give the babies the best chance they can have.

I will report back after Thursday's growth scan with another update.  For now, I'm off to deal with the housework... very slowly!
