Baby 9 has arrived!

From my hospital bed and Blackberry I'm writing to announce the safe arrival of Joseph Gerard Sullivan at 10.44am. He weighed in at 8lbs 9oz and measuring 57cm. He is, need I say it, absolutely beautiful and we are so thankful to be blessed again.

Just a thought

I've just woken from a much needed half snooze on the sofa, surrounded by the normal hustle, bustle and noise of the children in the same room. Not the best form of relaxation but better than nothing and I'm really finding it impossible to get through the day without nodding off at some point.

Anyway, as you probably know already, I am now expecting number nine. There are six boys and two girls and the lineup is as follows:

Child 1 - Boy - Age 17
Child 2 - Girl - Age 16
Child 3 - Girl - Age 11
Child 4 - Boy - Age 7
Child 5 - Boy - Age 5
Child 6 - Boy - Age 4
Child 7 - Boy - Age 3
Child 8 - Boy - Aged 15 months

As you can see and as mentioned in previous posts, the five of the boys were all born within the last seven years.

So it occurred to me, that if the newest one is a girl, that there will be somebody bound to utter the words to the effect of,

"Well now you finally have another girl you can stop now, eh?!"

Or if it's another boy will we be asked,

"So will you try again for a girl?"

Because of course, that's what it's about.

Ri-ight.

But you know it's bound to happen, no? Somebody's going to say it. It'll be interesting to see how long it takes!

38+5 weeks pregnant and a belly pic

After marvelling at the speed with which this pregnancy has gone I'm now going to complain that the last week or two has pass ed by at a snail's pace.

While I am incredibly thankful to have been blessed with a healthy, full term pregnancy, I am ready for it to be over. Very ready.

The practise contractions have been increasing in frequency and strength, as they have done with previous pregnancies in the final weeks. Instead of gaining any kind of momentum allowing full blown labour to begin, all they are serving to do is to make me aware that they are there, hurting just enough to make their presence known but not mild enough that I can ignore them.

My back aches, I can't cool down, I'm constantly tired and I personally have financed Rennie for the whole of 2010 and on top of that I now have thrush.

Great.

In short, I want it over with.

I'm ready to meet my baby and ready to not be a hot, sweaty, uncomfortable pain any longer.

Roll on Thursday. I'm counting the hours til you arrive.

Moan over.

The guessing continues on the gender, weight and length of the baby. I think the majority is still leaning toward it being another boy although quite a few people have state "girl" quite confidently. Doesn't matter how confidently you say it, though.

Que sera, sera...

A couple of people commented previously that they needed to see a belly pic before they were able to make their predictions.

Here you go...

This pic came somewhere from Google but can't remember the site now.  Thanks to wherever it came from though.

Yeah, ha ha.

I know you're not impressed but, trust me, the real picture would have been far more disturbing.

Do you really think we believe you?

When we hear a bang, or a shatter, or even silence and yell out "What's going on?!" do you really think we believe you when you reply "Nothing!".

Perhaps you think it's just your mum that doesn't believe you?

I don't think it is.

The bets are on!

15 days to go.

We thought it would be fun to write down our predictions for the new baby. Of course, the date of birth would not be included, but we thought we'd take guesses for gender, weight and length.

So far our guesses are as follow:

Daddy:     Girl   -   7lb 2oz   -     57cm
Mummy:   Boy  -   7lb 4oz    -    52cm
Harry:       Boy   -   7lb 0oz    -   56cm
Eddie:       Boy   -   8lb 9oz   -    45cm
Sid:           Boy   -   7lb 10oz  -   53cm
Paddy:      Girl and Boy  - Yes -  I farted
Caitlin:       Boy   -    8lb 3oz   -   47cm
Stephanie:  Boy  -    7lb 10oz  -  42cm

As you can see only one person thinks it's a girl.  Paddy prefers to sit on the fence it seems.  As for his other answers, well...

Fancy joining in?  Leave a comment below or email me at family@largerfamilylife.com with your guesses and I'll add you to the list.  It'll be fun to see if anyone gets it perfectly right!

Today I gave birth in a field and the hunter gatherers of the family killed the meat for our dinner

In case you didn't gather, that was all one big stretch-of-the-truth. It'll be interesting to check my Sitemeter statistics and see what search terms have brought people through to my blog with now though thanks to that title. Oh the mind games, how they please me. I have little energy left to do anything else. Can't I have a little fun?

In actual fact, I went to see the consultant at the hospital to arrange my date for the elective caesarean section and Mike and the boys went foraging for blackberries. Not quite a lie, hence the claim that it's actually just a "stretch-of-the-truth".

We do have our date.

Thursday 23rd September.

So even though I knew it was coming, now I'm going to probably get myself overpanicked and worked up with nerves because I know it's coming. Arranging to have myself sliced open with a couple of weeks notice is very different to having a few minutes warning as with an emergency caesarean. It's very nice to not have the panic of course. But it still gives me plenty of time to work myself up. Perhaps I just need to accept that there is no pleasing me and I will worry unnecessarily about anything.

I accept that.

But I'll also accept any and all thoughts and prayers too.

In the meantime, I can busy myself making half a jar of jam with the very modest bounty that the boys brought home.

The fastest pregnancy ever

We're in the last couple of weeks of what I keep referring to as the fastest pregnancy ever. Hence the title of this post.

It doesn't seem like I've had time to grow a baby, I don't know where this year has gone let alone going through an entire pregnancy. It's been nice that we've been able to not worry this time around, unlike the last time with Oliver. Perhaps that's been the difference? Being able to take it for granted rather than worrying and stressing over the what ifs and whys?

Tomorrow I have my appointment with the consultant to discuss our decision on having an elective caesarean, given that the last two ended up as emergencies. I'd originally asked about a trial of labour, but said I would think about an elective c-section. Mike and I have discussed it and made the decision that we will go ahead with it. By this time tomorrow we should know our pre-arranged birth date for our baby. It should fall some time next week or the week after at most. How close is that?!

My hospital bag is still not packed. I have washed the itty bitty baby sized cloth nappies and got them packed up and ready to take though. I'll probably have the push to get the rest done after I've seen the consultant. Having an actual date is bound to make it more real and kick me out of my laziness and ongoing procrastination from things that still need to be done.

Yes, this pregnancy has gone extremely quickly. It feels as though I have had a big, heavy belly plonked onto me overnight. The discomfort and heaviness suddenly making itself known. The practice contractions have been kicking in with a vengeance the last couple of weeks. The last two nights have been particularly sleepless. But it's all good.

All I seem to be saying is "I can't believe how quickly it's gone!".

I also can't believe how the nesting instinct has managed to evade me yet again.

Perhaps next time.

I admit it

I'll cry at anything.

But I think this story is worthy of a tear.

Praise God, what a miracle.

Too big for kisses

Sid climbed up onto the chair beside me, not wanting to watch the Disney film which everyone else had been bugging me to watch.

I put my arm around him and gave him a kiss. I then asked if I could have a kiss back.

He just put his cheek next to mine before pulling away.

So I asked him again if he would give his mummy a kiss.

Again he put his cheek against mine, then quickly kissed it and pulled away embarrassed and blushing.

"Hey! You did kiss me!" I exclaimed happily.

Still blushing he told me, "I just clicked your cheek when I was next to it."

Ah, you "clicked" my cheek. Not a kiss then?

Well, he *is* four after all.

Always learning

It's been about three weeks since Oliver took his first wibbly, wobbly steps alone.  Yearning to follow the bigger boys around for a while now, he's been determinedly working on his newfound skill.  All the practice has been paying off and he's becoming steadier and more confident each day.

Watching the little ones grow and become more independent is so bittersweet to me.  I remember feeling with the oldest two, and particularly Ben, being the firstborn, how I couldn't wait for him to start solid food, couldn't wait for his first word, first tooth, first steps.  Now with each first I feel happy, of course I do, but also a little sad too at how quickly they grow.  I want to stop the everyday part of life and just cherish the small things.  But time doesn't stop.  And unfortunately some of the memories will fade or disappear completely.

For now, I'm enjoying watching him on his new adventure.  Earlier on I noticed how he likes to mumble to himself as he walks drunkenly along.  Not literally drunk but you know what I mean.  Mumbling or singing to himself as he swaggers and staggers trying to get from one room to another.  It's funny to watch.  And to think, in another fifty years it'll be me swaggering and staggering while mumbling and singing to myself.

Wonder if I'll look as cute?
