Large families and sickness

Being a mum to a large family and living life blogging and writing about large family life, there isn't much I will say is too hard about it all.

Normally, I'll be telling you that having more children doesn't really make as much difference as you'd imagine.

Normally, I'll be telling you that it really was harder work when I only had two or three children.

Normally, I'll be telling you that the change from a small family to a bigger one was gradual, so I haven't been left feeling like I'm cooking or washing for an army.

Today isn't a "normally" kind of day.

The sick bug is rife in our house at the moment.  It has passed through Paddy and Mike, and then hit Sid before bedtime last night resulting in a major scrub down of the kitchen, lobby and downstairs shower room which was host to the puke-fest.

During the night, when I was trying to ignore Braxton Hicks and backache, I realised that Mike wasn't in bed.  He was scrubbing the bedroom carpet in the next room at 1am.  Harry now has the bug too.

Normally in a larger than average family it will take a week or two for a bug to work its way through each family member.  By which time it isn't unusual for a new bug to take over.  We had colds a couple of weeks ago, remember?  Now it's time for the tummy bug to make an appearance.

So, four members of the household have already had it.  That leaves baby Joseph, Oliver, Eddie and Caitlin to get it now.  I am sure it won't take long.  I am dreading it.

It also leaves me.

Almost 34 weeks pregnant with twins.  Already uncomfortable, in pain and having dealt with one thing or another over the last almost three weeks.   My back is now playing up.  The tenderness across the top of my uterus, put down to bruising from the babies, is increasing day after day and a stomach bug is definitely the very last thing I or these babies need.

I am bracing myself.

If I go quiet here you'll know why.

I must have missed the calm before the storm.  Please tell me that the calm also comes after the storm too?

Reassure me, please.

What happens when things don't quite go to plan?

This week hasn't turned out to be the greatest so far. It began with the washing machine creaking its way through the final stages of its life. It is still going... just... but we couldn't risk waiting for it to give up the ghost completely and being without so we had to order a replacement for it which is due to be delivered today.

Of course, Tuesday's appointment with the consultant didn't go to plan and ended up with me being admitted into hospital for tests on possible clots on my lungs. This was something I didn't even consider happening. Blood clots on my lungs were nowhere on the radar and I didn't even think they may be the reason for my symptoms. My consultant wanted to rule out otherwise though, and rather than skipping home announcing a date for the c-section I was heavy heartedly packing my overnight bag to head back to the hospital for monitoring and tests.

I went back in on Tuesday evening and a fetal monitoring machine was brought in, on which I was to be hooked up to in a little while. "In a little while" turned out to be almost eighteen hours later the following lunch time. But never mind.

The room was hot, hot, hot and I am finding it very difficult to keep cool at the best of times. Sitting facing the fan at full blast wasn't helping so I decided to have a shower to cool myself down. There is no cubicle, but the bathroom was more like a wetroom with a shower in the corner draining away directly into the plughole in the floor.

Except it didn't.

I finished my shower and looked for a dry part of floor to move to so I could get my pyjamas on. There was no dry part. There wasn't even a shallow part of the room. There was water, water everywhere! Wherever I stepped I created ripples. The ensuite was one, huge puddle!

I started pulling out the paper hand towels and tried mopping up the water from the floor, still half naked as I wasn't able to get my pj's on without dragging them through the sopping wetness. It took a good deal of time before I managed to get even a small amount of space dry enough for me to try and contort myself into my pyjamas. It would have been difficult at the best of times but throw a 33+ week twin pregnancy into the mix and I was gasping for breath desperately.

Thinking I'd open up the door and step out onto the dry floor of my room for a moment wasn't such a good idea after all. It turned out I'd not only flooded the ensuite but also my room. There was a good inch of water on the other side of the door too. Once again I grabbed handfuls of paper towels worrying that in a moment someone would a) walk in and slip or b) come and tell me off.

Two carers then walked in. They didn't slip. They didn't tell me off. They did go out and grab a few big bath-towels and started mopping my flood of biblical proportions up, reassuring me that no, it wasn't my fault because that shower did tend to flood and they should have told me and no, they didn't want me to clear up the mess myself.

I felt awful.

Anyway, I had a restless night full of interruptions and monitoring. Sleeping in hospital is a challenge and you never seem to come out of those places rested, do you?

I was taken down to the Nuclear Medicine department for my scan at 9am yesterday. They injected me with radioactive fluid which would run through my lungs, showing up any clots. As I was pregnant they said they would only be carrying out the second part of the test. If the results were unclear or showed a problem I would need to stay in another night and go back the following day to carry out part one of the test. I lay down on a table and I was then moved down into a tube with my head barely sticking out of the top. The tube moved around me, quite quietly and with not really very much vibration or movement at all, clicking every ten seconds or so when it took a picture of my lungs. I got to the last minute of the 20 minute procedure when I suddenly needed to be out of there. Now!

"How much longer to go?!" I called out.

"I need to get out! I need to get out now!"

The panic set in fast. I suddenly without warning had to get out of there. I was hot, sweating and clammy. I was ready to fight my way out of the machine.

I was told there were only about forty seconds left. If I moved now I'd have to go through the whole process again. I clenched my fists and squeezed my eyes shut and tried desperately to breathe.

"NO! I NEED TO GET OUT NOW! I REALLY NEED TO GET OUT NOW!!"

"Just thirty more seconds"

"I CAN'T!!! I NEED TO GET OUT!!"

Ugh, it was awful. I did make it. But I thought, no way will I be getting back in there again no matter what the pictures show. If I needed to get in they'd have to knock me out first. I take it I had a panic attack. I have never experienced anything like that before. It was horrible!

I waited and it took a few more hours before the results came back. After lunch time my consultant walked through to say the results were clear and there were no clots. My breathlessness, tiredness, dizziness and headaches were more than likely just down to no more than the end few weeks of a demanding twin pregnancy but they had to rule out something that could have been a lot more dangerous.

I could go home!

Despite being ready to grab my belongings and run we still had paperwork to sort out. I still needed to be formally discharged and we still had to agree on a date for the caesarean section. My consultant originally offered 31st October, more than five weeks away and way, way too far for my liking or acceptance. We finally agreed on 20th October. A day before my dad's birthday, and four days before mine... that's if they stay in until then! The 20th October is three weeks today. The countdown now begins to the latest day we'll meet our babies!

I was discharged from the hospital after a couple more hours of hanging around. I came home to a house well run by Mike in my absence. He'd picked up and taken over the reins well, even though he'd been up several times in the night with a vomiting Paddy. By the time I'd been home an hour Mike too was feeling unwell. By the evening, he was clearly down with a stomach bug himself.

It's not turning out to be such an easy week, this one. It's 6.15am and I'm the only one up at the moment. I hope Paddy and Mike are better today. I hope nobody else comes down with anything. I hope the babies won't decide to make their own entrance into the world into the midst of sickness and broken down washing machines.

But still, I have the all clear. No clots, no concern and a great relief from what could have been. Let the countdown begin!

Admitted to hospital

This is just a quick update for those if you who are not yet following on our Facebook page or Twitter. The appointment yesterday didn't quite go to plan. My consultant was concerned that my breathlessness/dizziness/headaches might be caused by blood clots in my lungs. I was allowed to go home to eat dinner and grab a bag of my things before coming back to be admitted.

I had a blood thinning injection late last night in order to break down any clots that might be there. I am booked in for a scan at dome point today which will hopefully rule out any problems. It's a little scary but I'm hoping everything will be ok and that I will be home later today.

Will update on FB and Twitter through the day.

A permanent state of tiredness

That is what I am in.  I only woke an hour ago as I normally do and I already feel like I haven't slept in a week.  There is little chance of that though as there is too much to do.  The children will start coming downstairs for breakfast soon and the day will have officially begun.  I am so thankful that Mike is off work now so that I can slope away for a nap if I need to.

Yesterday I mentioned having this soreness at the top of my uterus/under my ribs.  I can now tell you that it's definitely not a pain in my ribs but has got increasingly worse since yesterday.  I have no idea what it could be and I have never experienced anything like this before.  I need to mention it to the consultant at today's appointment, along with my concerns about Twin 2's less frequent movements in comparison to Twin 1.  I just need some reassurance but I am very reluctant to be an overly-worried-for-no-reason-hormonal-pregnant-woman.

Anyway, it won't be long now before we get the date for the caesarean section.  When do you think the babies will be here?

Twin Pregnancy Diary - 33 weeks 2 days

Twin Pregnancy 33 weeks

It's official.  I have had enough.

The last couple of weeks have been hard going.  I don't like hard going.  I like an easy life.  I like easy pregnancies, which thankfully I have pretty much always had.  I know, I've been spoilt.

I don't like being so big.  I don't like being so restricted and so cumbersome.  This stage is nothing like a singleton pregnancy at all.  While I feel incredibly blessed and lucky to be expecting twins I cannot help but feel completely and utterly fed up now.

The best part of the last two weeks have left me in some level of discomfort or pain in one way or another.  I am not used to that.  The headaches are still pretty much constant with little respite unless I take painkillers and I don't want to be pumping myself with them all the time.  They seem to go hand in hand with tiredness and I can't quite work out if the headaches cause the tiredness or vice versa.  I am still taking antibiotics for the urine infection and the Braxton Hicks go on regularly for hour after hour, day after day.  As with all the other pregnancies they aren't actually doing anything effective apart from annoying the daylights out of me and making me more tired.

I woke up this morning with the backache from hell and a pain across the top of my uterus.  Actually, I can't quite work out if it is a pain at the top of the uterus or a pain at the bottom of my ribs.  All I know is that I am feeling unbearably sore and tender there and I have never in any pregnancy experienced anything like it.  Throw in the regular BH contractions and I feel like finishing off a tub of ice cream all by myself.

All the way through this pregnancy I have been concerned about Twin 2's movements to some degree.  Twin 1 has always been the more active, but Twin 2 much less so.  When I expressed concern to the midwife she said she thought it was down to how Twin 2 was lying and its position.  After the scan it seems Twin 2 has now changed to a completely different position of head up yet the movements are still not any stronger.  I'm wondering whether this is worth bringing up to the consultant at tomorrow's appointment?

Oh, the scan!  I don't think I updated about that, did I?  Well, like I just said, Twin 2 has flipped around so it is now head up and wedged right under my ribs and is estimated to weight 4lbs 4oz.  Twin 1 is still lying head down and low and is estimated to weigh 4lbs 3oz.  Neither baby is showing any cause for concern.

Tomorrow is the consultant's appointment where we will be discussing the caesarean and scheduling a date for it.  At this stage I'm taking things one day at a time.  I'm trying not to let myself think that I could yet have another five weeks of this.  Two or three I could handle, but five... I think I'll cry!

My reasons for posting so late today

It seems by the messages I have received over the course of the day that my silence on here, Facebook and Twitter has given some of you cause for concern.

I am ok. The babies are ok.  And no, they haven't arrived yet.

However, to cap off what has been a generally quite naff week healthwise, I am now entertaining two unwanted guests, Mr Sore Throat and Ms Runny Nose, along with the equally annoying Mrs Itchy Eyes and Mr Aching Body. These guests have made their way around the rest of the family too and those that haven't yet succumbed look like are about to in the next day or so. Talk about something we just don't need at the moment. Having said that, it's better done and dusted now than when the twins arrive.

On the up-side of life, it was this little guys birthday today...

Even though he's still not fully over his cold of the last couple of days, it seems Joseph enjoyed marking the first year since his birth.  I can't believe he is a year old already.  I wonder how much older he will get before he becomes a big brother?

Joseph is such a placid, sweet and laid back little chap.  He is a joy, a complete and utter pleasure to be with and we are so very blessed to have him.  His smile brightens up my day.

Happy 1st Birthday, Joseph.  May you have many, many more.

Twin Pregnancy Diary - 32 weeks 5 days

This morning was the first one in the last six days that I haven't woken with a headache. Three and a half hours later and I can feel it starting up now. Still, at least I had a little respite.

I have been prescribed codeine to help with the headaches but I don't want to be popping pills. I don't like taking medicine and I can't be taking pills constantly to numb the pain in my head. Surely it wouldn't be good for the babies. I try to put it off until the pain is completely unbearable before I give in.

I have been taking the antibiotics as prescribed and am feeling much better than I was yesterday so that's a bonus. I haven't had any more vomiting or nausea and the dizziness has subsided for now so I am hoping the symptoms were just down to the urine infection and nothing else. Having never had experienced a urine infection throughout all my previous pregnancies, I'm quite surprised at how awful it can make you feel. Then again, I'm pleased to never have had any major issues during pregnancy and while I am prepared for things to get a little more difficult and for a higher risk of complications to arise I am thankful that I have so far had such an easy time of things.

Later today I will be off to the hospital once again, this time for a growth scan to check on the twins' well-being. Mike and I have made our guesses to today's estimated weights for each baby. I think 4lb 8oz for Twin 1 whereas Mike thinks it is 4lb 14oz, and I estimate Twin 2 to be 4lb 5oz to Mike's guess of 4lb 9oz. If you want to play along just make your guess in the comments below or over on our Facebook page and I'll update either later or tomorrow.

Sick

A quick update as I'm not feeling very well today.

Felt ill and went to hospital yesterday. They found a small amount of protein in my urine and a water infection. They weren't too worried about the protein at the moment as it was only one + and they prescribed antibiotics for the infection and codeine for the headaches.

Came home, went to bed and woke up with a headache, feeling dizzy and vomiting. Called hospital early this morning and have agreed that if I'm not feeling better later today that I will contact triage to see whether I need to go in later to let them check me and the babies over.  Better to be safe than sorry and I'd rather be sent home and be told there's nothing wrong with me than it to be flaring up into something more serious.

Mike's gone into work to collect his things and he'll be back in a few hours. That's it for him work-wise for the rest of the year.

The kids are coming down with colds too.

If I go to hospital later I'll update through the Larger Family Life Facebook page and Twitter.

Hi-ho, Hi-ho, It's off to hospital I go...

Despite the jolly tune of the title of this post it's not for a jolly reason at all but simply for monitoring and tests. Well, actually, I'm not entirely sure that I will be heading off to the hospital but I have a strong suspicion that the midwife will insist.

After the fourth continuous day of chronic tiredness and a crippling headache, well, not exactly a headache but more like pressure and pain in the back of my head, I succumbed and called the midwife. She insisted that I went straight to triage at the delivery suite at the hospital. I burst into tears.

I didn't want to go to hospital. I still don't. I can't bear the thought of being admitted, unless it's to have the babies and it's far too soon for that. I hate wards and most of all I don't want to be away from my family.

And then the sensible side takes over from the emotional side and tell myself the one reason that I should be checked over. It's for the babies.

The midwife told me to take two painkillers and if I still wasn't feeling better I could go and see her at the surgery this morning. I took the painkillers, laid down for most of the day and still there was no improvement so I called her back. She was reluctant to see me herself, saying that I needed more thorough checking over and that I really should go to the hospital. I cried again and offered that if I could just see her for the checks she could do, then if she was still concerned or found anything at all indicating I needed to be seen there then I would go. She said I could stop by the surgery at any time before midday to see her.

I am so frustrated to have got so far and now seem to be falling at the very last stage. I haven't had very much to worry about or be concerned about. My health has for the most part been pretty good, apart from the old iron issues. It would be such a shame for things to go pear-shaped now.

So this morning I am bracing myself. I am getting ready to go to the surgery to see my midwife yet I know I'm going to be sent on to the hospital. I'll be very surprised if at this stage they don't want to rule out things such as pre-eclampsia (which I don't think it is) or check on my iron (which I do think is the culprit). I just hope I am not admitted. Then again, if I am, I am. Logic tells me I need to do what is best for the babies and for my health. Unfortunately, logic is fighting a battle with hormones and the hormones seem to be winning.

I'll try to keep you updated through the Larger Family Life Facebook page and Twitter (which will be my main source of updating if I am admitted and when I go in to have the babies. Have you joined up yet?).

Twin Pregnancy Diary - 32 weeks 2 days

32 week twin pregnancy

The last few weeks of this pregnancy are snowballing symptom-wise.  The tiredness is becoming chronic now, yet with various things going on resting daily isn't always possible.  I'm taking snatches of the day to lie down on the sofa in the midst of toys and chatter and children.  The tiredness takes such a hold that it leaves me feeling sick and weak, although it's probably more like my iron levels are doing that and also causing the tiredness in the first place.  I am also suffering from the most excruciating headaches at the moment.  I'm very much looking forward to Mike finishing on Friday so I can disappear to my bed for half an hour here and there if I feel I need to.  We had a busy couple of days at the end of last week, resulting in my falling asleep several times throughout the day yesterday and spending the best part of it feeling quite ill.

I have another growth scan coming up on Thursday this week to check on the babies.  I predict they'll be weighing in somewhere around the 4lb mark each.  I am feeling and seeing plenty of activity so they seem to be doing ok in there, but it's good to have the reassurance of this extra monitoring.  I also need to go and have another blood test done to check on my iron levels.  It wouldn't surprise me if the consultant states that I need to go ahead with the iron infusions when I go back for my appointment next week.  I have mixed feelings, as never having had them before I am not sure what to expect, but I do feel like they couldn't make me feel any worse than I do already.  This stage of pregnancy is getting a little tricky for me.

The Braxton Hicks aren't letting up either.  My back has begun to hurt with the strain of the extra weight I am carrying (not just babies but possible down to excess ice-cream too), and I just feel like I'm one big, huge complaining lump.  I've also been feeling down for other reasons following a post I made last week.  Hormonal and over-sensitive perhaps, but the thought of a field in the middle of nowhere quite appeals at the moment.

Within the last couple of weeks, three women I had been following on Twitter have delivered their twins, one at 35 weeks, one at 36 weeks and one at 38 weeks.  I don't think I'm following anyone else due before me which brought the realisation that I am next.  While I know these babies need a couple more weeks at least I think I'll be sighing with at least a little relief to reach the 34 week mark, which is the goal everyone in the medical profession is giving as the point to get to in order to give the babies the best chance they can have.

I will report back after Thursday's growth scan with another update.  For now, I'm off to deal with the housework... very slowly!
